Wayne County committee approves sheriff's application for 2025 secondary road patrol grant

Wayne County commissioners on the Committee on Public Safety, Judiciary and Homeland Security approved a grant application and award with the Michigan State Police Office of Highway Safety Planning for the 2025 Secondary Road Patrol and Traffic Accident Prevention Program.

Benita Terry, director of administration for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, told the committee the grant renews annual funding for officers assigned to secondary road patrol and for equipment used solely for those patrol duties. "We come here before you today asking for your approval of a revenue grant from office safety, secondary road patrol, 2859000. And this grant goes through 09/30/2025," Terry said.

Director Banks Hall, the sheriff's grants director, confirmed the award covers officers who have worked under the grant and equipment purchases that will be used for secondary road patrol. Commissioners noted the program covers a list of municipalities rather than every municipality in Wayne County. The committee voted to approve the application; the motion, made by Commissioner Garza and supported by Commissioner Wilson, carried on the commissioners' electronic vote.

The approval authorizes the sheriff's office to apply for and accept the award and to use the grant funds through Sept. 30, 2025, for the purposes described by the sheriff's office. The committee did not take additional action or set conditions beyond the standard acceptance and recording of the grant award.
