The Jackson County Department on Aging asked the Human Services Committee Thursday to forward a staff recommendation to the full county board to approve purchase of 336 cases of meal trays for county-run meal programs, at a cost of $92,882.72.
Director Danielle told the committee each case contains 800 trays and that buying the larger quantity reduces per-unit cost; purchasing in much smaller lots would increase total cost. She said attempts to source a lower price through a cooperative vendor (Copro) were unsuccessful and that the quoted price is from the manufacturer. The director said purchasing 336 cases saves money overall compared with smaller, repeated purchases and that warehouse space within county facilities is used for storage.
The committee voted to adopt staff recommendation and forward the purchase request to the full board. The director also reviewed upcoming department events and program notes: a volunteer recognition luncheon scheduled for June 27, the county—s Senior of the Year nomination process (nominations close June 13 for volunteers age 60 and older), and outreach related to Meals on Wheels.
On Meals on Wheels and advocacy, the director noted recent state-level requests to increase funding for home-based servicesincluding personal care and respiteand a request to increase Meals on Wheels funding; the department said it supports proposals that would increase older-adult home services funding.
The committee voted to receive the department—s monthly report after moving the tray purchase forward to the full board.
