Commissioners advance multiple capital and facilities requests to regular meeting

The committee advanced several county capital and facility requests to the regular June meeting for full-board consideration, including two drones purchased from the county equipment (CDET) line, replacement of a parks department truck, an animal control facility furnace and condenser upgrade, repaving of the sheriff’s office parking lot and carpet replacement in the law-and-courts building.

A sheriff’s office representative described a multi-agency drone program that would allow law enforcement, the drain commissioner and emergency management to use two drones purchased from the county’s CDET equipment fund. One drone is described as waterproof for use during storm or flood response, and the speaker said the drones would assist damage assessment and drain-inspection tasks.

Parks staff requested replacement of a 2019 truck that was a total loss in a crash. County staff reported insurance proceeds (actual cash value) were placed in the motor pool fund and the motor-pool replacement would act like a lease payment charged back to the parks budget; staff said the insurance payout was approximately $18,000 (final figure to be provided later).

Animal-control staff asked to replace multiple heating and cooling units in kennel and kennel-adjacent areas; staff said six units are expected to be replaced, covering the oldest systems from the building’s original section (circa 1996). The sheriff and animal-control director said the upgrades could proceed at the next regular meeting unless systems fail sooner, in which case the board could call a special meeting.

The committee also advanced repaving of the sheriff’s office parking lot by the Cass County Road Commission and a carpet-replacement project in the law-and-courts building; staff said these were reviewed by the capital committee and budgeted. Board members expressed support for the capital improvements and praised maintenance staff for planning and prioritization.

Budget adjustments and a memorandum of agreement with Michigan Works were also advanced to the regular meeting; commissioners were told Michigan Works intends to occupy larger office space at the annex and to increase staffing presence Monday through Friday, which could modestly increase building revenue and services to residents.

All items were moved forward for final approval or procurement at the regular board meeting; no final contract awards or funding authorizations were completed at the committee session.
