Planning staff told the commission that United Rentals, which operates a heavy-equipment rental and sales use at 5300 South General Bruce Drive, is a legally nonconforming use and may not expand without plan-development approval.
Bridal Chandler, planning and development director, said the applicant submitted a site plan to add property to the operation and had been working with adjacent owners; Cheryl was identified as the case manager. "United Rentals, you know, on South General Bruce, it's a nonconforming use. You know, it's a grandfathered use essentially," Chandler said. "And as long as they don't expand, they're allowed to be there legally, but they're proposing to expand. And so the only way to do that is to add a plan development."
Chandler said the planning department's recommendation to the commission and council is disapproval of the expansion; staff said it would present details and conditions if the item advances to a formal hearing.
No formal planning commission vote on the United Rentals application occurred during the work session; staff positioned the item for further discussion during the commission’s regular agenda.
