Commission authorizes temporary overhire of two firefighters for upcoming academy

City staff said two current firefighters will leave shortly after academy start—one about two weeks after the academy begins and another approximately three months after. The overhires are temporary so the department can operate a complete academy; the chief will cover pay differences within the department budget. Staff said positions are budgeted but the authorization is required to exceed current personnel limits briefly.
Commissioners moved, seconded and approved the overhire authorization by voice vote. Staff said the hires will be adjusted back to the approved budgeted level once the temporary period concludes.
