Commission approves Eagle Scout’s proposal to build ADA-compliant bridge at Hugh Ramsey Nature Park

The City Commission approved a request from Boy Scout Jesus Medrano to fund and construct a pedestrian bridge near the pavilion at Hugh Ramsey Nature Park as part of his Eagle Scout project.
Parks and Recreation Director Javier Mendez said the project's design meets the Parks Advisory Board criteria and the board recommended approval. Medrano, a Harlingen Collegiate High student, told commissioners the bridge will follow ADA regulations though final dimensions may be adjusted during detailed design: "It will be following the ADA regulations, but the dimensions may be subject to change," he said.
Commissioners voted to accept the donation and approved the project. Staff agreed to have the city engineer review the design with Medrano to ensure ADA compliance and proper construction oversight.
The project is an in-kind park improvement donated by the scout and will be coordinated with city staff for permitting, materials, and inspection; the park department will monitor compliance with city standards.
