Venus proclaims April 25 Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day; resident recounts family overdose

Mayor Alejandro Galvez read a proclamation noting that illicit fentanyl is highly potent, is increasingly mixed with other drugs and counterfeit pills, and has caused injuries and deaths in Venus and surrounding areas. The proclamation noted local community group Venus Beyond Boundaries had brought the issue to city officials.
During public comment, resident Sheryl Keiser said she was speaking "for the voiceless." Keiser recounted the March 17, 2021, overdose of her son and praised local first responders: "We had two of our police officers show up. One of our police officers was five months pregnant at the time. She selflessly started CPR with us…Our chief of police went above and beyond our fire department. Everybody helped us out." Keiser said the community has worked to provide Narcan education and resources.
The council made no regulatory action at the meeting; the proclamation is a formal recognition and a call for community education and prevention efforts.
