Brownsville canvasses May 3 election, issues certificate and swears in Gustavo de Leon

Gustavo de Leon, sworn in as city commissioner for District 3, addressed the commission and attendees after the ceremony. “I’m here to serve you,” he said, and described his career with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and his intentions to work with fellow commissioners to “move Brownsville forward together.”
The commission’s action and the swearing-in occurred in open session at Brownsville City Hall; the meeting record notes that the canvass was taken pursuant to the Texas Election Code and that notice of the special canvassing meeting was provided under the Texas Open Meetings Act (Texas Government Code, Chapter 551). The commission recessed earlier in the meeting to recognize outgoing Commissioner Roy De Los Santos; that recognition was ceremonial and occurred separate from the canvass and oath items.
The commission adjourned the special canvassing meeting after completing the certification and oath; city staff noted refreshments were available following the meeting.
