Fort Worth reviews pavement-marking materials; staff weighing bulb-out replacements with striping

City transportation staff briefed the council on pavement-marking performance and strategies to extend the life of striping and minimize safety impacts from raised curb bulb-outs.
Martin Phillips, assistant director of Transportation and Public Works, said the striping program met a target of 2.9 million linear feet and that the department has trialed several materials. "We're strategizing on the cost of the material and the application, in terms of traffic volumes and environmental impacts," he said.
The nut graf: Staff said different materials and application methods are under review to extend service life in areas of varying sun and traffic exposure, and that some bulb-outs might be removed and replaced with painted striping where raised features are causing vehicle damage or nighttime visibility problems.
Council members asked whether reflective markings or alternative treatments could improve safety where bulb-outs are struck. Phillips said in some locations staff has considered removing raised bulb-outs and replacing them with striping to maintain sight lines while avoiding the hazard of raised curbs. He said staff will meet with council members and local project teams to coordinate implementation in targeted areas such as West Seventh and the Stockyards.
