East Berry Street corridor study yields draft street plan; section eyed for 2026 bond design funding

City transportation staff told the council on Tuesday that after an 18-month public outreach effort they have a draft East Berry Street corridor street plan and next steps toward schematic design and implementation. Armond Bryant, project manager with Transportation and Public Works, said the draft incorporates community and regional partner input and will move to schematic design and then to form-based code and thoroughfare plan amendments.
The draft covers safety, transit and land-use recommendations for the corridor. "That is step 1 of our overall East Berry Street corridor study," Bryant said, adding that schematic approval and form-based code would follow adoption of the plan.
Why it matters: Council members discussed whether a section from Cobb Park Drive to U.S. 287 should be included for the 2026 bond program. Bryant said the planning process is intended to identify "fatal flaws" and produce a preliminary design with phasing and potential funding approaches so that the segment could be ready for the bond project. "We would need funding for design in the 2026 bond to complete design in order to be ready to go to construction," he said.
Council asked about on-street parking near Lake Arlington and specifically at Berry and Stallcup. Bryant said resident concerns had been noted and that proposed cross sections had the on-street parking removed at that location.
Ending: Staff said they will bring the draft East Berry Corridor street plan before council for consideration and that subsequent schematic and land-use steps would return later; no formal vote occurred at the work session.
