The York County Board of Commissioners voted May 13 to temporarily assign the county’s general assistance duties to the clerk of the district court’s office while staff and commissioners discuss a permanent placement.
The temporary transfer matters because general assistance funds and decision‑making affect emergency rent, utility and funeral assistance for residents who fall outside other eligibility categories.
The board noted general assistance had migrated among offices over time and that the current deputy clerk, Chandra (last name not specified), had been handling the caseload but wished to step back. The board chair said clerks’ staff, led by Mary (clerk), indicated they would "take it on, but temporarily until ... we can find a fit." The board directed staff to work with the clerk’s office and other community partners to determine a long‑term arrangement.
Eru Bloom, director of the York County Community Coalition (YC3), discussed YC3’s central navigator and offered collaboration: "We can help them financially 3 times a year," Bloom said, adding YC3 cannot assist with funeral property costs and suggested YC3 could help house funds or work with clients referred from general assistance. Bloom left pamphlets and contact information for commissioners and staff.
Commissioners and staff said the county will explore options including continuing the program inside county government or partnering with YC3 or another local agency. The board approved the temporary transfer by roll call and asked county staff to report back with options and costs.
No permanent budget or staffing changes were approved at the meeting; the clerk’s office will manage general assistance temporarily while the board evaluates long‑term solutions.
