Commission directs staff to draft zoning ordinance amendments to regulate entertainment establishments

The Portsmouth Planning Commission on April 1 approved a resolution directing city staff to prepare zoning ordinance amendments regulating entertainment establishments, restaurants and clubs.
Zoning administrator Trafalco Boone (spoke as zoning administrator) told commissioners the proposed resolution would give staff additional enforcement tools and approval processes to address concerns that have arisen with increasing numbers of event spaces and entertainment uses across the city. "This amendment before you today is gonna help us in putting, if you will, some teeth into our ordinance to help us regulate the entertainment establishments in the city," he said. Proposed changes include requirements for approval and processes to remedy violations and would be drafted in consultation with the city attorney’s office.
Commissioners said the timing was appropriate given recent permit requests and the resolution passed without recorded opposition (6‑0). The resolution authorizes staff to draft specific ordinance language and return it for public review and formal amendment.
