Coos Bay proclaims May 2025 as Mental Health Awareness Month and Wildfire Awareness Month

The Coos Bay City Council voted unanimously to proclaim May 2025 as Mental Health Awareness Month and as Wildfire Awareness Month.
Mayor Joe Benetti read the mental health proclamation and called on citizens, agencies, schools and businesses to increase awareness of mental health needs and to support accessible services. Commissioner Drew Farmer, who the council invited to read portions of the proclamation based on his work in mental health, described outreach and funding challenges at the state level and said some reform efforts have been delayed while a state hospital is under federal investigation.
Chief Atkins and apprentice firefighter Ashton Galloway joined the council for the wildfire proclamation. The council’s wildfire proclamation cited changing climate conditions, increased fuel loads, and the need for defensible space, emergency planning and public awareness. The Coos Bay Fire Department noted deployments in 2024 and 2025 and urged residents to prepare defensible space and evacuation plans.
Both proclamations were approved by motion and voice vote with no recorded opposition. The mental health proclamation calls on local institutions to recommit to awareness and prevention efforts; the wildfire proclamation calls on residents to take proactive steps to reduce wildfire risk.
