Committee discusses scope and funding options for Weddell Bridge repair; engineering needed

The Sweet Home Park and Tree Committee discussed the condition of Weddell Bridge, reviewed a prior inspection report and said the bridge likely requires extensive repair or a near-complete rebuild. "From everything that I understand, bridges like that have to be fixed from the top down," a committee member said, praising outreach to groups with experience in wooden bridge repair.
Committee member Greg (committee member) said the floor and suspension systems would likely need removal and reassembly. "It'll be extensive labor to get that floor done and redone," he said, noting the work will require specialized bridge engineers and could reveal additional rot once removed.
Members reported outreach to potential donors and partners. Angela said she spoke with a Jamboree office contact who indicated interest in funding but asked for details: a general contractor, cost estimates and timelines. Members also cited a longstanding donor relationship with Bucks Sanitation. The Rotary suggested a large donation might warrant naming opportunities; committee members agreed to explore donor plaques rather than renaming the historically documented "Weddell Bridge." "We just said that we would look into options, not that we would promise any of that," Angela said.
The committee agreed to seek engineers experienced with wooden bridges and to coordinate site visits with groups that have done similar projects, including Mill City and Linn County. Members emphasized the need to keep water out of the structure as a protective strategy and discussed enclosing the sides to reduce interior moisture.
No formal action or contract decisions were taken; members agreed to continue fundraising outreach and technical planning. The committee ranked Sankey Park Phase 3 as higher priority for immediate engineering work but said Weddell Bridge remains on the project list.
