The Alexandria Board of Architectural Review approved multiple routine and contested applications on Monday, including two consent‑calendar projects and three alteration cases that drew limited discussion.
Consent calendar: The board approved consent items for alterations at 224 North Fayette Street (Parker‑Gray District) and 330 North St. Asaph Street (Old and Historic District) without roll‑call debate. Applicants on those cases received certificates of appropriateness as submitted.
430 South Washington (BAR2025‑00072 / BAR2025‑00073): Architect Dario Davies told the board the team will comply with BAR window‑performance specifications; staff recommended approval and the board voted to approve the alterations and a related partial demolition/encapsulation request. The applicant described an LED wall‑washer detail and how it will be recessed so only a soft wash is visible from the sidewalk.
43 South Pitt (BAR2025‑00101 / 00106): Architect Bill Cromley and applicants proposed replacing an original slate roof in minimally visible locations with synthetic slate, citing maintenance concerns around rooftop mechanical access. After some member questions the board approved the application with a modification to allow synthetic slate on the less‑visible roof areas, noting prior precedents and limited public visibility.
417 South Royal (BAR2025‑00104): Applicant Sean Murphy presented an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) prefabricated cottage planned for the rear yard. Board members asked for minor changes to proportions, door and window head trim, and cornice details. The board approved the application with a condition that the applicant work with staff to simplify and refine details (possible small canopy, revised cornice corners and simplified window muntins) prior to permit issuance.
Votes: Each of the above items was approved by the board either by consent or following a motion to approve per staff recommendations; where the board requested small refinements it approved conditional certificates and asked staff to review final details prior to issuing permits.
