Greater Williamson Road group outlines safety, facade grants and workspace growth

Valerie Brown, executive director of the Greater Williamson Road Area Business Association, briefed council on April 7 about economic development and safety efforts along Williamson Road.

Brown highlighted a recent community "walkabout" with the Roanoke Police Department attended by nearly 60 people intended to build trust and provide businesses practical crime‑prevention advice. She said another walk is planned and one will be held on the county portion of the corridor.

The association is managing a Department of Transportation‑funded facade grant pilot tied to the Envision Williamson Road planning effort; Phase 1 runs through May 31 and five properties applied for awards: Minute Muffler, Porter's Automotive, American Motel, A & E Auto Salon, and Ritchie Freeze. Phase 2 is planned to begin July 1 using the association's own funds.

Brown also reviewed the Williamson shared workspace's usage: over the past six months the facility has served 16 businesses regularly, its conference rooms have logged 60–83 requests per month, and the association is exploring an expansion to add private offices, a larger conference room, and training/podcast space. She said Williamson Road includes about 49 international businesses between Orange Avenue and Hershberger and that city support has broadened the association's reach.
