Roanoke City Council voted to accept and appropriate a $7,570,000 grant from the National Main Street Center’s Unlocking Capital on Main Street program.
The ordinance authorizes the city manager to execute documents necessary to accept the funds and to appropriate fiscal 2024–2025 grant dollars. Council member Powers moved the measure and Council member Nash seconded; the ordinance passed by roll call vote.
City staff said the grant will be used to unlock private capital for Main Street revitalization projects; the city will administer the grant and follow the program’s requirements. The large federal/private grant was described on the council docket as a targeted investment to support building and business improvements in downtown and neighborhood commercial corridors.
Council members did not amend the appropriation. The ordinance dispensed with a required second reading by title and will now be implemented by the city manager’s office in coordination with planning and economic development staff.
