The City of Norfolk Planning Commission approved a design review to install an illuminated blade sign at 804 Granby Street, a contributing building in the Norfolk and Western Historic Overlay, on a unanimous vote.
The sign proposed measures 95 inches tall by 22 inches wide with 12-inch-tall internally illuminated channel letters. Planning staff said the total signage area is 14 square feet and the sign would be mounted into the existing masonry veneer using aluminum wall brackets and would provide a 9-foot ground clearance.
Staff presenter Faith (planning staff) told the commission the Architectural Review Board recommended approval by a 7-0 vote on the condition that the aluminum brackets be mounted into the mortar rather than into the brick. The ARB’s condition was intended to reduce damage to historic brick and to follow preservation best practices in the Norfolk and Western Historic Overlay.
Commissioners voted to approve the project as presented, incorporating the ARB condition. The vote was recorded as Ayes: Commissioner Pendleton; Commissioner Vann; Commissioner Wells; Commissioner Young; Commissioner Bateman; Commissioner Sutter. No dissent was recorded.
The commission’s approval sends the staff recommendation and ARB condition forward to the next administrative step for final permitting and installation scheduling. The presentation materials indicate the sign will use LED illumination and aluminum brackets mounted into mortar as required by the ARB condition.
