County accepts $3.92M pool renovation award and $50,000 lifeguard support grant

Ulster County’s Public Works committee on May 12 voted to accept two state grants: a Dormitory Authority grant of $3,920,000 toward the county pool renovation project and a $50,000 grant from the New York State Department of State to support municipal lifeguard recruitment and retention.
Why it matters: the grants substantially offset county capital and operating costs for swimming-facility renovation and staffing at municipal pools.
Staff told the committee the pool renovation capital project was previously established at an estimated $5.5 million. The Dormitory Authority award will provide state funding for a portion of the project under the SWIMs-related grant process; staff and legislators discussed contingency treatment in the capital budget and noted the grant represents roughly 70% of the estimated capital project after accounting for standard contingencies. The committee approved acceptance of the Dormitory Authority grant unanimously.
The committee also approved a $50,000 grant from the New York State Department of State to assist county municipalities with lifeguard recruitment and retention; the award will be added to the 2025 budget. Legislator McCullough moved acceptance and the committee approved the grant unanimously.
Ending: staff will incorporate both grants into the capital and operating budgets and proceed with planned pool renovation procurement and lifeguard-support activities.
