Commission approves teal exterior at 2445 South Street; owner cited lack of prior knowledge

The Beaumont Historic Landmark Commission voted to approve file PZ2025-108 on April 14, 2025, allowing the teal-green exterior paint on the house and rear building at 2445 South Street to remain and bringing the color into the historic-district record.
Planning staff told the commission that the property was painted without an approved certificate of appropriateness and that the commission must review colors not on the officially adopted palette; staff said the commission has approved similar colors before and recommended approval of this request. "Commission has approved similar colors in the past, but because it's not on the official adopted color range, we have to bring it before commission," staff said.
Property owner Steve Hayes told commissioners he had been renovating the house on behalf of his sister after moving from California and was unaware the color required prior approval. "I had no idea that the color had to be approved," Hayes said. Commissioners complimented the renovation; one commissioner called it a "very tasteful job." Planning staff noted the structure is not listed in the district survey and recommended approval.
A motion to approve PZ2025-108 passed on a roll-call vote. The staff recommendation and the commission's action regularize the home's color in the commission records; any future exterior changes will require compliance with the adopted color palette or a separate certificate of appropriateness.
