Resident urges council to stop weekly insert distribution that residents say litters neighborhoods

Sachse — During public comment at the Feb. 17 City Council meeting, resident Christine Horning urged the council to address what she described as recurring litter from weekly advertising inserts distributed to homes.
Horning said the inserts — “supplemental ads like ads for the grocery stores” — routinely appear in yards, on curbs and in streets, often left wet when it rains. “It's creating trash in our neighborhood,” Horning told the council, saying she typically discards the inserts without reading them and asked the council to consider taking steps to stop the distributions or identify the distributor.
Horning said she believed the inserts might be distributed by the Dallas Morning News but said she was not certain. She provided the council with an address and referenced a contact number printed on the bags, and asked staff to investigate whether the distribution could be curtailed. She also said her neighborhood no longer has a homeowners association and that residents are often unable or unwilling to pick up the materials.
Mayor and council members acknowledged the comment during the public-comment period. No formal council action was taken on Horning’s remarks during the meeting; she asked that the city “do something about it” and provide staff follow-up as appropriate.
