City finance staff presented the first quarterly financial report and a six-year sales-tax model at Wednesday's meeting and asked council for feedback on format and frequency.
Finance staff said the general fund expenditures sat at roughly 25% for the first quarter, which aligns with expectations; revenues were slightly over, driven by the property-tax timing that concentrates collections in December. Staff proposed producing a monthly snapshot report in addition to the quarterly statements and said they will include minor funds in future quarterly reporting.
Councilmembers requested explanatory footnotes when particular line items exceed typical percentages (for example, maintenance accounts showing higher percentages due to timing or annual recurring purchases). Staff agreed to add brief notes for outlying items and to tailor future reports to council's requested level of detail.
Staff also presented an internal sales-tax forecasting model that includes combined allocations to general fund, streets and EDC; finance staff said they would provide the EDC with the same model and breakouts on request.
Councilmembers praised the analytical approach and requested small tweaks such as explanatory notes for unusual variances and a visual snapshot for a monthly report.
