Tenafly council adopts four ordinances, approves consent agenda and schedules two ordinance hearings

Tenafly Mayor and Council on Jan. 21 adopted four municipal ordinances on second and final reading, approved a consent-agenda block of resolutions and introduced two new ordinances for public hearing on Feb. 4, 2025.
The council voted to adopt ordinances amending local codes on (1) recycled leaves (Ordinance 25-01), (2) parking (Ordinance 25-02), (3) signage and zoning rules (Ordinance 25-03) and (4) stormwater control (Ordinance 25-04). Each ordinance was presented for second and final reading, no public comments were recorded on those items, and the roll call votes recorded unanimous approval by the members present.
In addition to the ordinances, the council approved a consent agenda covering resolutions numbered 25-55 through 25-76. The consent package included routine administrative and capital items noted in the agenda; a specific consent-item question was raised about a command vehicle included in the capital plan but the council ultimately moved and approved the full consent block by roll call.
Council members also introduced two ordinances on first reading and set public hearings for Feb. 4, 2025, at 7:30 p.m.: Ordinance 25-05, which would allow certain classes of cannabis establishments (class 2–5 and microbusinesses) as conditional uses in the downtown business zone; and Ordinance 25-06, which would add a short-term rental section to the borough building and housing code. Each introduction passed on first reading and was scheduled for the Feb. 4 public hearing. The roll call on the cannabis ordinance recorded several affirmative votes and at least two abstentions recorded during the roll call sequence; the short-term rental introduction passed on unanimous vote of those present.
The council also approved an administrative appointment to the recreation board (Nicholas Kallias) and passed a resolution (R35-77) to enter closed executive session to discuss property acquisition and affordable-housing litigation under attorney–client privilege, citing N.J.S.A. 10:4-12. The closed-session minutes were described as subject to release when the matters are resolved.
