District previews summer programs: academy, library, credit recovery, cybersecurity camp
Summary
Snohomish School District outlined its summer offerings, including a summer academy at Snohomish High School (July 14–31), weekly elementary library hours, book cafe neighborhood visits, credit recovery, middle school transition weeks, band camp and a new CyberPatriot cybersecurity camp for grades 6–8.
The Snohomish School District on May 14 previewed its 2024 summer programs, highlighting a three-week Summer Academy housed at Snohomish High School, expanded library access, mobile neighborhood book-cafe visits, credit recovery options and a new cybersecurity camp supported by CyberPatriot materials.
District staff said Summer Academy will run July 14–31, Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m., and is expected to serve about 350 students; approximately 200 students had confirmed enrollment at the time of the briefing. “We target students that would best be served in the summertime to keep them connected and engaged,” a district presenter said.
The district will operate a summer library program at elementary schools on Wednesdays from July 2 through Aug. 20, 9–11 a.m., and will continue the Book Cafe mobile outreach, which visits local mobile home parks and community sites on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning July 8 through Aug. 14.
Credit recovery opportunities for high school students will be available after the regular school year; staff said demand has fallen compared with earlier years because of improved on-time recovery during the school year. The district expects fewer students will need the summer credit-recovery blocks but will provide on-site support and the online program (GradPoint) for students who sign up.
Middle school transition programs are scheduled for Aug. 11–14, 9 a.m.–noon, to help incoming students familiarize themselves with middle school buildings and routines. Band camp for grades 6–8 will run July 28–31 at Snohomish High School with shorter daily session times to reflect students’ stamina on instruments.
A new CyberPatriot Summer Cybersecurity Camp is planned July 21–24 at Snohomish High School for students in grades 6–8. The district said the camp is based on CyberPatriot curriculum materials from the Air Force Association; no prior experience is required and staff are still finalizing teacher assignments.
Staff discussed funding: the Snohomish Education Foundation provides support for Summer Academy and Credit Recovery. The district said its summer programming budget bucket is approximately $200,000–$220,000; the full program-level breakdown was not provided at the meeting.
Registrations are underway; staff said they actively confirm attendees to reduce attrition and that the district has a practice of accounting for expected dropouts when planning capacity. No program approvals or fee changes were taken at the meeting; the briefing was informational.
