A Port Huron resident urged the City Council to consider traffic-calming measures on Edison Parkway and Prospect Place after a May 17 high-speed chase in which the suspect reportedly fired several shots near Pine Grove Park.
Brandon Ontoon told the council the incident occurred around 7:15 p.m. and described the area as one where “kids riding bikes, people walking their dogs, families visiting the park” regularly use the corridor. He asked the council to consider speed humps, signage, narrowed lanes or raised crosswalks and requested increased law enforcement presence in the park.
Ontoon said police visited his home to request camera footage after the incident and that the event made him “realize just how vulnerable our neighborhood is.” He emphasized that the request was “not about overreacting to one event” but about proactive measures to slow traffic and increase safety.
Mayor Ashford responded later in the meeting that the council would invite the police chief to present a “snapshot” of safety and enforcement options for Pine Grove Park and the boardwalk and requested a future agenda item to allow the chief to brief the council on patrol and safety strategies.
No formal traffic-calming measures were adopted at the meeting; councilmembers asked staff to arrange the police briefing and to consider possible measures for future discussion.
