The Port Huron City Council voted to accept a $119,800 bid from Goddard Coatings Company to design, reseal and restripe existing tennis courts on the north side of Sanborn Park to accommodate pickleball. The motion was moved by Councilmember Pemberton, supported by Councilmember Moserak and approved in roll call.
During the public hearing, a resident questioned the project’s priority, saying $120,000 “could buy over 205 hundred-dollar trash cans throughout the city” and raised concerns about safety and missing sidewalks on 20 Fourth Street. The resident said pedestrian safety should be the council’s top priority and argued funds might be better directed to sidewalks and infrastructure.
Council members clarified that the pickleball conversion is one use of a larger grant and that additional grant funds would be used for other projects going forward. The council’s approval was by recorded vote with one dissenting vote from Councilmember Payton.
The council’s action authorizes the contract award to Goddard Coatings Company; staff noted the broader grant includes funding for other park and infrastructure projects. Implementation tasks and scheduling were not detailed in the meeting minutes and will be handled by the parks department and finance staff under the city’s procurement process.
