The Stratford Town Council voted May 12 to refer a schematic design for the restoration and addition to the Benjamin Nichols building to the Building Needs Committee for implementation and oversight.
Mayor Laura R. Hoytich described the schematic prepared by the Stratford Redevelopment Agency with Spiegel and Partners and FCA Company: the main floor would be used as a gallery and public space, with updated kitchen and bathrooms and removal of an external fire stair; a rear addition would add a ramp and an elevator to provide ADA access to all three floors. The plan envisions a 30-by-40 multipurpose room, four lower-level studios and five existing second-floor studios plus six new studios in the addition. A walkout ground-level garden area was described to complement Will’s Garden on the property.
Council member O'Connor moved to approve the plans as referred by the Stratford Redevelopment Agency and to refer the project to the Building Needs Committee; Council member O'Neil seconded. The motion passed by voice vote. The referral assigns oversight and implementation planning to the Building Needs Committee; no construction contract approval occurred at the meeting.
