City staff placed a late application from the Victoria Lions Club on the meeting's emergency docket and the council approved a temporary liquor license for the club's May 4 event at Lions Park.
"We do usually ask for 60 days in advance," city staff member Miss Nelson said, explaining why the item was handled as an emergency addition. Nelson said the state administers temporary liquor licenses and requests municipal approval; because the Lions Club submitted the application after the usual deadline, staff added the item to the agenda so the city could forward the application to the state.
Steve Olsen, activities chair for the Victoria Lions Club, apologized for the late submission: "I first want to apologize to staff for making this an emergency. Our the gentleman that usually handled the liquor license and getting the information into the, the city has taken a new position. He's not with the Lions anymore. And quite frankly, this just got lost." Olsen described the May 4 event as a community celebration tied to the city's Victoria in Bloom activities and said the club plans family activities and food trucks. "We're gonna sell, hopefully sell alcohol there. We're tying it into Cinco de Mayo. So we'll we're thinking margaritas and some kind of festivities around that theme," Olsen said.
Olsen said the event will include an inflatable obstacle course, llamas that were popular with children last year, and seven food trucks currently confirmed with a possible eighth. He described a bean bag toss tournament to start near 10 a.m., asked that trucks be on site by 9 a.m. with many beginning service around 10–11 a.m., and confirmed the event location as Lions Park. City staff and the council approved the temporary liquor license by voice vote. Nelson and Olsen said the Lions Club will submit future event dates earlier to avoid emergency scheduling.
