Victoria Parks updates: Deer Run playground completed; upcoming public engagement for Hunters Brook and Marsh Hollow parks; recreation programs and facility ops

Parks staff told the Victoria Parks and Recreation Committee on April 21 that a second round of playground updates at Deer Run Park was completed the preceding Monday and is now open to the public. The upgrades added climbing features and amenities intended to broaden age access for the playground.
Staff also highlighted upcoming community events and programs: the spring/summer recreation guide has been distributed, registration is open for programs, a family "Superhero Party" for toddler and preschool ages is scheduled for the coming Friday (5:30–7:30 p.m.) at the Victoria Recreation Center, and the Victoria in Bloom community event is set for May 3 downtown.
The committee reviewed recent smaller projects: two Eagle Scout projects completed last year included a Gaga pit at Rhapsody Park and four new community garden plots at Holy Family Community Garden (all plots rented for the season). Staff reported new park sign stakes indicate locations for replacement or updated signs across the park system and that several sign locations were being adjusted ahead of final installation.
Looking ahead, Jenna outlined public engagement opportunities for larger future parks. Hunters Brook Park and Marsh Hollow Park — each described as just over five acres — will be the focus of public engagement events this summer: Hunters Brook on Tuesday, June 24, and Marsh Hollow on Tuesday, August 19; an additional trails engagement event is planned for July 2. Staff said Brookmore Park (located in the Lennar development near Cochia and Kerber Court) is included in an upcoming capital improvement plan but requires separate funding; no timeline was specified.
Victoria Recreation Center (VRC) overview Staff provided a summary of the Victoria Recreation Center’s history, facilities and funding model. The center opened in 2002 (initially a single ice sheet) and later expanded with the school district’s participation. The city owns the building and operations are co-maintained with the school district: the city oversees non-ice facilities and programming while the school district operates the ice rinks under a lease. Staff said the recreation center is primarily self-supporting through rentals, memberships and program revenue; the transcript does not record an explicit expiration date for the current lease/operating arrangement.
Programs and amenities discussed include two ice rinks, gymnasium with two full basketball courts (and convertible equipment for volleyball and other uses), indoor open pickleball, a fitness center, walking track, multipurpose rooms, and seasonal youth camps. Staff said new and continuing programs this summer will include outdoor workouts at Wasserman Lake Preserve and senior bingo, among other offerings.
Ending Staff asked committee members to attend the public engagement sessions this summer and to bring neighborhood feedback to staff and future meetings. Committee members thanked staff for the season preview and the completed playground improvements.
