Arts commission advances murals, utility-box wraps and veterans project; call for artists draws responses

The North Saint Paul Arts and Culture Commission reported May 7 that several public-art projects are moving forward, including a call for mural artists, utility-box wraps, a veterans park project and the community "heart hands" photo project.
Commissioners said the call for mural artists has generated interest: Jordan Layman and subcommittee members reported 14 responses to date, with a May 19 application deadline and a May 28 meeting scheduled with Historical Society representatives to refine mural objectives. The commission expects to notify a selected artist by June 6 if possible.
The commission also reviewed utility-box wraps and related production steps. Members said the vendor process typically requires high-resolution files (vector, Illustrator, PDF or JPEG) and that staff will assist artists to secure the correct format if needed. Commissioners noted turnaround from vendor to installed wrap typically takes about four to six weeks, putting many wraps on track for completion this summer.
A veterans park art concept has been broadened: subcommittee members reported they will issue a wider call to artists and said they plan to publicize opportunities within military-veteran networks to encourage submissions. The commission said it expects to incorporate veterans'board feedback in the artist brief.
Commissioners showcased the "heart hands" photo project selected for a utility-box wrap across from a park and described plans to deliver images to the vendor. Staff said they have a large set of community photos to provide; commissioners expect final production to take several weeks and for the wrap to be installed this summer.
No formal votes were taken; commissioners described next steps and scheduling for artist selection, vendor coordination and production timelines.
