The Cheshire School District policy committee voted to forward an electronic-devices policy to the full board and spent substantial time discussing cell phones, artificial intelligence and classroom practice.
During the meeting central-office staff described a draft electronic policy (cited in discussion as policy 5131.81) and said the committee would send it on to the full board for consideration. A board member made a motion to move the policy to the board and the motion passed by committee voice vote.
Committee members and staff debated how restrictive rules should be by grade level. Staff said the district—s practice has been to require devices to be put away "in the classroom" and allow more personal responsibility outside class; at the high school level the presenter said students "are way better than they were" on limiting phone use in class, but noted hallway use remains an issue.
The meeting also included an extended conversation about artificial intelligence. Central-office staff said teachers and administrators recently completed AI training and the district has a teacher-led strategic group working on classroom guidance. The presenter cautioned that AI tools can produce inaccurate "hallucinations": "there are hallucinations," they said, and stressed that effective AI use requires strong subject knowledge to check outputs.
Staff told the committee they are preparing an AI-specific policy and additional professional development led by a district strategic group; they recommended starting with staff and then building classroom guidance for students.
The committee approved forwarding the electronic-devices policy to the full board; staff will continue work on the AI guidance and return both items for future readings.
