Special education director warns $1.5 million in federal IDEA funding would be at risk if grants are cut

Assistant Superintendent for Special Education Mrs. Turner told the operations committee on April 21 that the district—s federal IDEA funds total about $1.5 million and that the district would face significant staffing and program impacts if those funds were reduced or eliminated.
Turner described the grant-supported uses as staff, professional development, instructional supplies and assistive technology for students with disabilities. She said the IDEA allocations cited were subject to federal appropriations but that the funding is an existing federal allocation and that staff were not currently expecting a cut; she added she could not guarantee there would be no federal reductions.
Committee members requested specific impact figures. Chair and committee members asked staff to provide a follow-up email with exact amounts at risk; Turner and staff agreed to supply the detail. Turner and another staff member, Mrs. Latour, later provided approximate title-grant totals during the meeting: Title I approximately $800,000, Title II about $100,000 and Title III about $50,000. Turner said the IDEA total (both Part B/611 and 619) and related staffing supported in the grant sum to about $1,500,000.
The committee did not take a formal vote on the grants; members asked staff to provide a written update with exact figures for distribution to the board and town officials.
Those figures will inform ongoing budget planning as the district prepares for potential federal funding uncertainty.
