Board waives second readings, adopts three student-focused policies

The Madison Public Schools Board of Education voted 6-0 to waive second readings and approve three district policies covering administration of student medications in school, attendance/truancy and chronic absenteeism, and selection of instructional materials.
Diane, chair of the Policy Committee, summarized the committee's April 22 review and the recommended edits. She said the administration of student medications policy had minimal changes and that the committee recommended waiving a second reading before final adoption. The board moved, seconded and voted to adopt the policies as action item 11.
The policies adopted were identified in the meeting packet as: Policy 5120.303 (Administration of Student Medications in the Schools), Policy 5011-3 (Attendance, Truancy and Chronic Absenteeism) and Policy 6100.1 (Selection of Instructional Materials). Diane said notes from the law firm Goodman & Goodwin accompanied the packet entries on the new restorative-practices material and related policy drafts.
The board did not record individual roll-call votes during the public motion; the clerk announced the outcome as "motion carries 6, nothing." The policies will be incorporated into the district policy manual per standard adoption procedures.
