The City of Mission authorized acceptance of two grant awards at Tuesday’s meeting: a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department recreational trails grant in the amount of $250,000 and a Texas Department of Emergency Management BRIC (Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities) grant for $404,710.
City staff said the $250,000 trails grant includes a required 20% cost share the city will provide through in-kind labor (estimated at $50,000) for trail overlay and vegetation cleaning. The city will track staff labor as part of the cost share. The council approved acceptance of the award unanimously.
The $404,710 BRIC grant carries a 28% local cost share. Staff reported the federal share is $290,001.43 and the city’s share is $114,566.11. The BRIC funds will be used for engineering and design of the Sunset and natural land drainage project; staff described the program’s purpose as supporting hazard mitigation activities that promote climate adaptation and resilience. Council voted unanimously to accept that award as well.
City staff and the city manager recommended both acceptances. Councilmembers asked procedural questions about how the in-kind match would be documented; staff said labor hours would be tracked and submitted to the granting agencies. The meeting record did not include construction schedules or project completion dates for either project.
