The Aurora West USD 129 Board of Education voted April 7 to approve the consent agenda for the meeting and to adopt a resolution authorizing the honorable dismissal of two full-time educational support personnel, Shannon Locke and Christina Magick.
Board President Kearns called for the consent-agenda motion for the April 7 packet; the motion was moved and seconded and carried on a roll-call vote recorded as: Mrs. Saperstein — Aye; Mrs. Dykstra — Aye; Mrs. Lorenz — Yes; Mrs. Stone — Aye; Mr. Kearns — Aye. The board then considered action item 5.1, a resolution authorizing honorable dismissal of Shannon Locke and Christina Magick. That motion was moved and seconded and likewise passed on a roll-call vote with the same recorded ayes.
The meeting later opened a public-comment period. The secretary read names for speakers who requested Spanish-language readings and English transcriptions; public commenters included Diana Vasquez and Neli Paredes (statements read in Spanish and provided in English for the record). The superintendent then delivered remarks on the progress of the district and the work ahead.
Before adjourning the open session, the board approved a motion to enter closed session "to discuss matters related to personnel" under Illinois law. The chair cited the statutory authority as 5 ILCS 120/2(c)(1) for personnel matters; the roll-call vote to enter closed session was recorded as aye by the same voting members.
Board President Kearns used his closing comments to outline upcoming board transitions: he said Julie Stone had been reelected, Eric Garcia had been elected to the board, and that a swearing-in of the new board is scheduled for May 5. He also announced the board is accepting letters of interest to fill a vacancy created by Thomas St. Jules’ resignation after his appointment as an associate judge for the 16th Judicial Circuit; applications open April 8 and are due April 16 with interviews scheduled for April 22 at 5:30 p.m.
The board adjourned the open meeting formally before entering closed session; that motion also passed on a roll-call vote.
