Veterans service officer outlines outreach, claims assistance and local events

David Eckley, Lincoln County Veterans Service Officer, briefed commissioners March 25 about outreach work, assistance with veterans'benefits claims and local events.
Eckley said he is accredited with the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs, the American Legion and the VFW and handles claims, counseling, referrals and appeals for veterans, survivors and dependents. He said he filed more than 250 claims in the prior year and participated in Veterans Day and Vietnam War Veterans events. Eckley also described the Veterans Stand Down event that connects veterans with services and said he regularly coordinates with local posts and the Balric (sic) Military Heritage Alliance.
Eckley said he will expand outreach in 2025 as demand grows and noted the county's veterans office moved to the courthouse main floor in December, improving access. He asked commissioners to watch for future event announcements and said he would continue working with community partners to reach veterans across the county.
