Mayor Bruce Archston on May 13 read a proclamation declaring May 2025 as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Awareness Month in the town of Addison, urging residents to support research, advocacy and services for those affected by the disease.
The proclamation, read aloud at the council meeting, described ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) as a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease that "gradually robs individuals of their ability to walk, talk, eat, and breathe," and stated that most patients survive two to five years after diagnosis. The proclamation also noted that "every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with ALS and another dies from it" and highlighted the role of clinical trials and assistive technology in improving quality of life.
The proclamation cited the ALS Association’s research investments, stating the organization has invested more than $154,000,000 in projects across the United States and internationally. Mayor Archston concluded by proclaiming the month of May as ALS Awareness Month in Addison and encouraged residents to "join in supporting ALS research, advocating for increased funding, and standing in solidarity with those affected." The council said it will send the proclamation to the ALS Association.
