A sheriff's office representative said the vehicle price for a 'turnkey' unit was $52,450 and that the fully outfitted cost, including lights, sirens, decals, prisoner partition and other equipment, would total $66,914. The speaker said some in-vehicle equipment—radar, camera system and radios—still must be tested and may require replacement. The department said KCAMP (the county's insurer) and the at-fault party's insurer would be involved in any reimbursement and subrogation discussions.
Commissioners asked whether used vehicles or scheduling the replacement into the 2026 budget were options. Staff noted the sheriff's fleet replacement schedule and high mileage on current vehicles; commissioners and the sheriff discussed the tradeoffs of replacing now versus waiting for the 2026 capital schedule. One commissioner said funds might be available in various county accounts and suggested staff provide budget copies for review.
Because questions remain about available funds and expected insurance reimbursement, commissioners voted to table the purchase decision for one week and directed staff to provide detailed budget information and to consult KCAMP about likely reimbursement timing. No purchase authorization was given at the meeting.
