Planning commission approves allowing electric vehicle charging stations as permitted use in commercial and industrial zones

The City of Weatherford Planning and Zoning Commission on March 12 approved a staff proposal to amend the zoning ordinance so electric vehicle charging stations are a permitted use in the city’s commercial districts and the industrial district.
Staff presented a text amendment to Title 12 that would remove EV chargers from the ordinance’s kiosk definition and add a distinct definition for “electric vehicle charging stations.” Monica Johnson, the presenting staff member, said the change would move EV chargers from a kiosk category that currently requires a conditional-use permit into a permitted use in C-N (central neighborhood), C-1, C-2, C-3 and I (industrial) zoning districts. “With that, staff recommends approval,” Johnson said.
No members of the public spoke during the public hearing. Commissioner motions carried unanimously. The commission voted to send the ordinance amendment forward; the item will be considered by city council as part of the normal adoption process.
The amendment standardizes how EV infrastructure is treated across commercial zoning categories and is intended to facilitate installation without a separate conditional-use hearing in those districts. Staff noted the change is a text amendment to the zoning ordinance and that standard site-plan and building-code reviews still apply for any station installations.
