Commission approves GovDeals MOU to auction surplus county property

The Bourbon County Commission voted on Monday to enter a memorandum of understanding with GovDeals, an online auction platform, to sell surplus county property and equipment.
Carrie, a GovDeals representative, told commissioners the platform is free to the county and generates revenue by charging a buyer—ee. “We represent government agencies and we do this online for a number of reasons,” she said, describing the platform nd how sales are processed.
Sheriff Bill Martin told the commission his office has used GovDeals previously and recommended the service. After discussion about timing, reserves and how proceeds are remitted, a commissioner moved to hire GovDeals and a second was recorded; commissioners voted in favor by voice and the motion carried.
GovDeals staff said they will provide an MOU for the commission to sign and will begin work with county staff to photograph and list assets if the county chooses to proceed with particular items. Commissioners noted some hospital equipment and public-works items may be listed in the near term but said they would coordinate on timing and any contractual stipulations tied to specific assets.
The county will receive proceeds by check or ACH after a sale; GovDeals said the platform also provides an audit trail of transactions. No purchase or subscription fee was imposed on the county under the MOU discussed in the meeting.
