The Bourbon County Commission debated the sheriff’s salary during the Jan. 27 meeting and approved a motion to set the sheriff’s pay at $75,000, and to grant a $5,000 raise to the EMS director. Commissioners said they would return with a revised salary schedule next week that lists the full pay table and the fiscal impacts.
Commissioner Krueger, who chaired the salary discussion, said listening to resident concerns was a motivation for reconsidering earlier pay proposals. "One of the main points that I ran on was listening to the people," Krueger said, opening a round of discussion about elected officials’ compensation.
Commissioners discussed earlier resolutions that had proposed higher percentage increases for other elected officials and noted the sheriff’s office has a large operational budget and staffing responsibilities. One commissioner referenced statewide sheriff salary ranges of about $75,000 to $100,000 as context for the decision.
There were competing motions earlier in the discussion (including a proposal that would have set the sheriff near $75,600), but the commission ultimately approved the motion to set the sheriff’s pay at $75,000 and to give the EMS director a $5,000 increase. The motion was seconded and passed by voice vote; commissioners said they will return a formal salary schedule and bring the updated pay table back for formal adoption at the next meeting.
The commissioners directed county staff to prepare the fiscal impact analysis of the changes and to present a revised salary schedule for adoption. The commission’s stated next step is to publish the new schedule for formal approval at the next regular meeting.
