The Arlington City Council on April 24 approved an alternate sign plan to allow a single 50-foot flagpole at the National Medal of Honor Museum site, a deviation from the standard sign-height rules for the site's ballpark mixed-use planned development.
City staff presented the request, saying the plan development ordinance and the Unified Development Code set ordinary sign-height limits and that under the city's process an alternate sign plan may be approved by council without needing a planning commission hearing. Staff noted the museum is requesting the extra-tall flagpole to mark the national significance of the facility; the applicant representative, Jack Hill of Hill Sports and Entertainment Consulting, was not in attendance.
The council voted to approve the alternate sign plan. Council Member Hogg moved for approval and Council Member Galante seconded the motion; the mayor called the vote and the motion passed.
The council made no further findings on alternative locations or technical specifications for the pole in its public remarks. Staff identified the project site as currently zoned ballpark mixed-use PD and said the alternate sign plan modifies the sign standards in that ordinance and the Unified Development Code.
No public speakers addressed the item. The record shows Jack Hill was noted as the applicant but absent; staff offered to answer questions and none were raised before the council voted.
