Downtown Arlington’s business district is launching a formal petition drive to reauthorize its Business Improvement District after the current assessment term sunsets this summer.
Maggie Campbell, president and CEO of the Downtown Arlington Management Corporation, told the City Council in an afternoon work session that the renewal will be decided by property owners rather than the general electorate. “It’s not a vote of the general public. It’s a vote of the property owners. That’s what the state statute requires,” Campbell said.
The petition drive opened as the BID’s 10-year term approaches expiration. Campbell said the proposed renewal would keep the existing boundary, keep the same assessment methodology tied to appraised values from the Tarrant Appraisal District, and extend the district for a new 10-year term with a modest increase in revenue.
