Director's report: City Council approved one CUP, denied townhome-plus-assisted-living plan; LJ Engineering contract approved for Gus Thompson corridor study

Staff provided the commission with a brief director’s report on items recently considered by City Council and upcoming projects.

Staff member Steph reported that at the City Council meeting on May 5 the council approved a conditional-use permit for May and Yvette and did not change the Planning and Zoning Commission’s recommendation. Steph said the council considered a townhome development on Clay Mathis that had previously included an assisted-living facility; the council denied the most recent plan after the applicant presented a version that reintroduced assisted living.

Steph told commissioners the council approved a contract with LJ Engineering, a Dallas-based planning firm, to lead a corridor study and future land-use planning for the Gus Thompson corridor from Towne East to the city limit. “They will be working on a corridor study, future land use plan for the Gus Thompson Corridor,” Steph said, and staff said the commission would be invited to upcoming events related to that project.

Steph also said staff will ask City Council during the budget process whether the city should proceed with a comprehensive-plan update; the commission was asked to respond to a late-afternoon email about training preferences and topics. “We sent out an email late this afternoon, asking questions about future training opportunities, what your interests are… and also, we’re asking input on what topics are you most interested in,” Steph said.

No formal commission action was taken on these items; they were reported for information and future engagement.
