Public Works Director Roger McCormick explained petitioner Peter Iannone Jr. requested the abandonment to increase the size of contiguous parcels he owns and facilitate proposed development. The county’s assessor valued the strip at $15,501 (about $1.56 per square foot); the petitioner had requested a lower comparable valuation but the board approved the assessor’s figure.
McCormick said the county retains utility easements when public right‑of‑way is abandoned, and noted Arizona law preserves existing easements for utilities and other public uses. One neighboring resident raised concerns about a future sanitary sewer alignment in Ashfork; Public Works said proposed sewer plans can use existing streets and that adjacent property owners can apply separately to acquire remaining halves of the alley if desired.
The board approved a resolution to abandon the specified alley section subject to standard recording steps and a 120‑day period for the petitioner to complete procedural requirements.
