The district reported a nationwide PowerSchool breach in late December and said it is working with the vendor, law enforcement and cybersecurity consultants to assess any local impact; staff are also implementing safeguards such as single sign‑on and multifactor authentication.
Canal Winchester district officials told the board on Jan. 6 that PowerSchool — the student information system used by many districts nationwide — reported a data breach in late December that may have affected multiple districts. District staff said they are working with PowerSchool, law enforcement and cybersecurity professionals to determine the scope of any exposure affecting Canal Winchester.
"PowerSchool has taken steps to secure its systems, notified law enforcement, and engaged cybersecurity professionals to prevent future incidents," the superintendent said during the report, adding that PowerSchool believes the accessed data have been deleted. District staff said they will continue to monitor and provide updates as more information becomes available.
In recent months the district has enabled Google single sign‑on across many tools and enabled multifactor authentication for staff accounts as part of broader efforts to protect data; staff said those were precautionary steps that complement the vendor response.
Officials did not provide a definitive list of which local records, if any, were affected and said assessment is ongoing. The district said it will notify families if the investigation indicates district data were compromised and will report further findings to the board.
