The chief flagged motorcyclist fatalities as the primary trend and said the department will pursue education, enforcement and engineering measures in coordination with the city’s engineering staff.
The chief said traffic stops were up roughly 15% and citations were up about 17–18% from the prior year as part of stepped-up enforcement. He also thanked the public for staying off roadways during recent winter weather, which he said reduced call volumes and likely limited crash counts during that event.
Councilmembers asked for clarification about the high-fatality locations; the chief said those were “busier intersections” with high traffic volumes and that the department is working with engineering on potential solutions. He also confirmed public education efforts will include reminders for drivers to be mindful of motorcyclists and other vulnerable road users.
The chief declined to speculate on broader causes beyond the department’s planned enforcement and education steps and offered to continue reporting crash data to council.
