Board reaffirms interest in performing arts center; asks consultants to include convention and hotel-linked scenarios

The Woodlands Township Board on May 13 reaffirmed support for evaluating a performing arts center as a long-term priority and told staff and consultants to broaden the phase 2 financial analysis to consider added convention uses and the possible pairing of a luxury hotel.

Directors said a performing arts center that includes flexible seating or convertible spaces could increase convention usage and materially alter the facility’s financial pro forma. Several directors noted examples in other cities — where a luxury hotel and a performing arts venue sit adjacent and share patronage — and asked consultants to test scenarios that combine performing arts, meeting/convention space and hotel demand in the phase 2 viability study.

Staff reported the phase 2 deliverable will focus on financial viability and is expected back in roughly two to three weeks; the board asked staff to confirm whether convention use, multiuse seating and hotel-linked revenue streams are included and to expand the consultant scope if necessary. Several board members said they want Visit The Woodlands and hotel partners to provide convention-data analytics showing lost conventions and potential demand if more convention space were available.

Directors emphasized the township should not own or operate a hotel but should pursue private hotel partners to locate adjacent to any performing arts center. No formal decision to proceed with design or site selection was made; the board is awaiting the phase 2 report before taking additional action.
