Board approves $500,000 roof replacement for Fire Station 8 after repeated leaks and mold remediation

The Woodlands Township Board voted Feb. 26 to replace the roof at Fire Station 8 at a cost of $500,000 after staff described repeated leaks and a recent mold-remediation effort.
Fire Chief Palmer Buck told the board the station, built in 2011, has had continuing leak issues since Hurricane Harvey and multiple repairs had not solved the problem. "All of our contractors say it just needs to be a total roof replacement," Buck said. The existing roof uses faux clay tiles; the department plans to install a standing-seam metal roof with a 30-year warranty.
Why it matters: The board said the replacement is intended to prevent further operational and health risks at the station and to avoid recurring repair costs. Staff said the contract would be a turnkey arrangement and that doing a single replacement with a warranty is expected to provide long-term savings compared with repeated spot repairs.
Insurance: Chief Buck said the township filed an insurance claim with TML; he reported that TML had not yet acted on the claim as of the meeting.
Board action: The board approved the roof replacement motion by voice vote; staff will execute the contract and proceed with procurement and scheduling.
