Fire Station 5 and Emergency Training Center projects nearing next phases, chiefs say

Assistant Chief Doug Adams and Fire Chief Palmer Buck gave the township board an update on construction at the Emergency Training Center and Fire Station 5 on Jan. 22.
Adams said work at the Emergency Training Center is entering its final interior phases: new bathrooms and a locker room are nearing completion and infrastructure for a backup generator is being installed. He told directors the ETC interior demo phase — adding a full kitchen and break room to support extended operations during disasters — was the next major, noisier construction step and that the ETC contractor expected to close out the current phase on Valentine’s Day.
Chief Buck reported progress at Fire Station 5: site prep is complete and the concrete slab has been poured. Trailer and crane staging were in place; steel delivery was delayed slightly, but the chief said the contractor expects to begin vertical construction in late January. Leadership said occupancy by the end of the year was the target and that weather-related delays and coordination with CenterPoint (for a transformer) had posed the largest schedule challenges to date.
The board voted to accept the report. No formal changes to scope or funding were announced at the meeting.
Why it matters: The ETC upgrades are intended to improve crew accommodations and resiliency during extended events; Station 5 is a new operational asset that township fire leadership says will improve emergency coverage.
